“The owlery.” She said softly. There was no need to draw attention. Fergus was present. It would be an ongoing chess game with him. Anneli would need to stay a few steps ahead of his moves if she had any fighting chance. It would require involving Loce, however regrettably. She looked down to her Puffskein, who was now humming, its eyes closed, in a momentary nap. Anneli smiled down at the small creature. She would allow any distraction from the thoughts whipping through her mind.

Isla walked down through the grounds. She wore her hair in a ponytail. Her mother had instilled a respect of magical creatures in her, even if her mother also said most were useless. It had been some time since she reviewed the subject. Isla hoped the Professor wouldn't call on her to answer any questions. As the outdoor classroom came into view, she frowned. No Gwen or Theo in sight. Maybe they would be joining later. At least Loce and Anneli were present. Unlike some of her classmates, she was open to befriending Slytherins. She had come from a family of them. Isla liked the two; Anneli was intimidating but she admired the couple together. They didn't seem to follow any prescribed order. Plus, it was kind of inspiring to see a couple her age so close. She wondered if she and Theo would end up the same...
She took a spot next to Oliver. A teammate, easy choice. Isla definitely wasn't in the mood to sit next to her brother. The puffskein in front of her was an orange ball of fluff. She took out some parchment, casting an eye to Professor Valko.

Post by Professor Viktor Dimitar Valko on Apr 16, 2023 21:33:37 GMT -8
Professor Valko stood at his desk, his hands holding either end. It had taken him little time at Hogwarts to create a mess. To be fair, keeping a tidy classroom with magical creatures was a feat in and of itself. Thankfully he was well versed in charms as cleaning wasn’t in his wheelhouse. He leaned against the desk, giving a wave as students entered. His warm smile appeared under a gruff, dark mustache and stumble. “Hello all, my name is Professor Valko if we have not met.” He greeted, his deep voice intimidating yet warm all in one. “I will be serving as your Care of Magical Creatures Professor this year. In this classroom, care of the creatures comes before anything else. You must drop all ego at the door when you enter here,” He said, smiling and eyeing the gate, “No amount of knowledge or skill can replace the empathy it takes to properly treat a magical wound, to cure an illness, or to simply help a creature to live up to it’s full, healthy potential.” His voice was strong, even if his knee wasn’t at the moment, “Before you are families of Puffskeins, all rescued from local magical creature poachers. As I’m sure you’ve heard from your parents, illegal breeders and poachers have become a prevalent problem across the wizarding world. Our beautiful creatures hold so many valuable ingredients…but we must only take what nature allows.” Professor Valko looked to the sky for a moment, a breeze rushing through the class. Viktor smiled to Loce Vaisey, excited to learn his students beyond the notes he had been given. “You could pet them, but beware. Your fingers may get bound up in their sticky tongues.” He said, eyeing Mr. Woodrow as he stuck his hand through the cages. The creatures were completely harmless. He wanted to start off with something that might test their compassion more than anything else. Viktor nodded and smiled, “Aloha, Zander.” He reflected, smiling. He noted the presence of Loce Vaisey, Anneli Oden, Zander Keahi, Fergus Reinhardt, Oliver O’Shea, Beowulf Woodrow, Aracely Davies, Ezra Ansel, and Isla Reinhardt. A full house. He felt some nerves then. Professor Valko cast his hands through his hair, “Let’s begin.”Lesson One Begins “Today we begin with a harmless common creature, a Puffskein.” He said, patting one on his desk, “I’m sure many of you have seen them in shops or in your friends' homes as pets. They are friendly and easily-trained, making them some of the most common pets in the wizarding world,” He said, “I locked them up for their safety more than yours.” Professor Valko stated, eyeing Mr.Reinhardt and Mr.O’Shea. He ignored their requests to unlock the cages. “They are ideal for children, as they can be played with roughly and are known for their resiliency.” Professor Valko tossed his Puffskein up in the air, which happily panted and bounced back into his arms. “They are known for their exceedingly long, thin, sticky tongues. Used for scavenging spiders and moths typically, it can range up to twelve inches long…For +5 points, could anyone tell me what their favorite treat is?” He said, grinning and winking to the class. Viktor would call upon the fastest hand. “Though they will eat anything, including garbage, if left untrained.” “They also can be very beneficial to the potion industry. Their fur, which contains magical properties, is rather valuable. It is a fairly important ingredient in the Laughing Potion.” He stroked the dark red Puffskein on his desk. Professor Valko smiled, “The best way to train these guys is by using a reward system. They need to be fed twice a day. Withholding treats such as spiders or moths is useful for increasing motivation to comply with your commands. For example, my Puffskein, Tsvetanka – yes, I name all my creatures – has been trained to perform a variety of tasks. She can retrieve small objects, knows to stay away from garbage, and is generally easier to care for in the home.”
He pulled out a vial of dried moths, holding it just over her head. Tsvetanka’s eyes widening happily. “Tŭrkulni se.” He commanded in Bulgarian. The puffskein began to roll over enthusiastically. Viktor patted her head and smiled, “Good job.” He said, offering her a dried moth as a reward. Her long tongue appeared, gobbling up the moth happily. “The command can be any word, but must be used consistently for them to associate the command with the treat. So often creatures such as Puffskeins are caged up by frustrated owners who do not take the time to help them reach their full potential or to reign in their energy. Or, they are abused simply in the quest for their magical fur. Which leads me to today’s objective…”
Viktor pulled out his wand, unlocking the cages on each of their desks, “Today’s objective is to get to know your Puffskein,” He smirked, “As your assignment will be leave with them today. You will be assigned to care for your Puffskein for exactly one week. Additionally, you will be require to teach your Puffskein to comply with 1 appropriate command. During next class, you will be graded on the care of your Puffskein, as well as their ability to perform the command.” He said, forewarning the class, “I will provide all the food they might need, as well as treats that can be used in your reward system.”“My expectation for you today is to greet your Puffskein. You will find bowls of dried spiders and moths under your desks. Please feed them and begin to formulate which command you will attempt to train them.” He said, matter-of-factly, “So, please, make yourself comfortable. They are officially your pet for a week. And no, you may not be excused from the task...it has already been approved by the Headmistress." He said, though warmth came through, "I will be at the head of the class to observe your feedings and to answer questions." He said, crossing his arms and leaning on his desk.

Loce nodded to Anneli, acknowledging the meeting place. He placed his hand lightly over hers, squeezing it gently. He wanted to just walk out of class and go deal with what they needed to. But, class had to come first. At least for now. He nodded and smiled at Isla as she joined the class, giving her a quick wave. “Hey Isla.“ He said, wondering if Fergus would try to ban her from speaking to him just because. He turned his attention to Professor Valko as he took to beginning the lesson. He half reached for parchment to take notes, then shrugged and just listened. There was nothing new to learn about these in general. His sisters have had them for pets for years. He cast a sidelong glance at Anneli when he mentioned illegal breeders and poachers. He chuckled when the professor asked what their favorite treat was. He’d learned a long time ago not to put their cages too close to your beds. He raised his hand to answer. “Wizard bogeys” He answered, if nothing else it would get a laugh from a few. He listened carefully to the instructions. Keep the furball alive for a week and teach it a parlor trick. He could do that. He grinned. He had a good idea of what he would train it to do. It would get a laugh at least. And would require some additional charms. But… it could be done. He looked down at his pet for the week, then up to the professor. “Do they have names already?” He asked, not wanting to confuse the creature by giving it a new one if it already had one.

Wesley hurridly made his way to the Care of Magical Creatures class, his books and quills clutched tightly in his hands. He was late. As he approached the class, he couldn't help but appreciate that it wasn't in the castle, but rather out on the grounds. The sun was shining and there was a cool breeze blowing, making it a perfect fall day.
As he entered the class space, he saw that the lesson was on Puffskeins, cute little furry creatures that looked like balls of fluff. He couldn't help but smile as he watched them hop around their cages. He sat as quickly as possible, hoping to go unnoticed.
The professor, Valko, was new and Wesley found him a little intimidating. He was tall and had a stern expression on his face, which made Wesley feel a little uneasy but as he took a seat and stared at the cute little critters he felt a little better.
As Professor Valko began to lecture, Wesley took out his notebook and began to take notes, trying to keep up with the fast pace of the lesson. He watched as Valko worked with his own Puffskeins and showed the class how to care for it properly.
After the lecture, the class was instructed to take care of their own Puffskein. For a whole week. Wesley stared at the little fluff ball in-front of him not sure how that would go.

Zander sat eagerly at his desk, his eyes fixed on the bright colored Puffskein before him. Cute little furballs with long tongues and a penchant for mischief and Zander couldn't help but smile at their playful antics.
Today, each of them will be paired with a Puffskein, Professor Valko had announced, for the whole week! Zander was excited, what a fun introduction to the class.. As the Professor spoke Zander jotted down notes, despite it all being information he mostly knew already. He found it always useful to journal everything regarding magical creatures. This was exactly the kind of work he hoped to do as a magizoologist someday-- okay maybe not Puffskeins specifically… but, just all of it. Professor Valko posed a question to the class regarding what Puffskeins eat and Zander's hand shot up, but he was beaten to the punch by a Slytherin boy, whose hand had somehow moved even faster.
Zander returned his attention to his Puffskein and the bowl of dried spiders and moths nearest him. "There, there." He speaks in a low and calming tone with the creature, a smile unable to leave his face. "There you go." He offers up a moth and the Puffskeins long tongue eagerly grasps the treat. He heard the Slytherin boy ask about their names. Zander lifts his head to the Professor, aslo curious as to the answer .

Viktor grinned, laughing heartily, "Yes, Mr.Vaisey, you are correct. A Puffskeins favorite snack are wizard bogeys," He said, shaking his head, "They are known to lick the inside of their owners noses during their sleep. Terribly unpleasant. All the more reason to train them." Viktor scanned the room, happy to see most of the students taking kindly to the creatures, "+5 points will be awarded to Slytherin for the correct answer, thank you Mr. Vaisey." He understood that this was a fairly basic lesson for many of them. However, it would be an important one. It would allow him to assess who was capable of caring for and teaching a common, harmless magical creature. Their success in the caring of the Puffskein would determine whether or not he could introduce more dangerous animals just yet. Viktor had too great a respect for the creatures, the students, and his job to be thoughtless. He nodded his head yes, "Each Puffskein has a name tag hooked to the top of each cage. I apologize if they are a bit...messy. Handwriting isn't my strong suit." He laughed, rubbing the back of his neck. "Since coming to Hogwarts, they have been raised with these names. For this week, you will call them by this name for the sake of feedings and training." Viktor scanned the class, "However, I've received word from Headmistress Gunvald that she would be open to allowing adoption to any student who successfully cares for, and trains, their Puffskein. In that case, you would be able to change their name after this week." The name tags are written in splotched ink, barely intelligible:
Student | Puffskein Name | Gender | Age | Color | Personality | Loce Vaisey | Mozŭk
| Male | Adult | Yellow-White | Intelligent. Excessively rambunctious. Likes to play. Not easily motivated. | Anneli Oden
| Svetlina | Female | Adult | Green-Yellow | Friendly. Naps a lot. Hums when sleeping. Easily motivated by treats. | Zander Keahi | Yuni | Female | Juvenile | Light Pink | Spunky. Young. Completely untrained. Likes spiders the best. | Fergus Reinhardt | Boets
| Male | Adult | Dark Green | Grumpy. Previously injured, but healed. Quite bulbous. Enjoys treats. | Oliver O'Shea | Treva
| Female | Juvenile | Tangerine | Energetic. Requires a lot of exercise. Pants like a dog. Needs training. | Beowulf Woodrow | Pari | Male | Adult | Bright Yellow | Calm. Loyal pet. Will be easy to train given the right treats. | Aracely Davies | Momiche
| Female | Adult | Brown-Grey | Observant. Older. Enjoys walks and dried moths. | Ezra Ansel | Devet | Male | Juvenile | Light Blue | Bubbly. Tiny. Likes to jump up high. Needs a lot of help in general. | Isla Reinhardt | Ostrov
| Male | Adult | Orange | Adventurous. Can become aggressive if you attempt to block their escape. | Wesley Thorsen
| Dŭrvo
| Male | Juvenile | Blue | Attentive. Steady. Will do well at learning tricks. | Gwen Shaw | Ekip | Female | Adult | Red-Pink | Sloth. Will barely move for treats. Please take care of her... |

Loce read the tag on the top of the cage. “Intelligent, rambunctious, likes to play…. You sound just like me Mozŭk, we should get on well.” Not easily motivated… He looked over at Anneli, then the cage with her Puffskein, leaning over to read the tag on her cage. “Ac os ydych chi'n rhywbeth o gwbl fel fi ....” He lifted the books from between the cages and pushed Mozŭk’s cage closer to Svetlina’s. He chuckled as Mozŭk hopped and rolled. “Behöver bara rätt motivation.” He said, winking at Anneli. Loce opened the cage an Mozŭk headed towards Sveltina’s cage but Loce scooped him up and put him on his shoulder. “What language do you speak? Well, by next week we’ll have you trained up in a few.” He rubbed the Puffskein’s stomach and it closed its eyes humming contentedly.

Post by Gwendolyn Shaw on Apr 18, 2023 19:10:51 GMT -8
Gwendolyn Shaw woke up with a contented stretch as the warm morning sunlight filtered through her dormitory window in the Gryffindor Tower. She yawned and rubbed her eyes, feeling well-rested after a good night. As she swung her legs out of bed and onto the cold stone floor she realized that she had some time before her first class of the day, and so decided to treat herself to a leisurely breakfast.
She threw on her Gryffindor robes and headed down to the bustling Great Hall, joining her fellow students at the Gryffindor table. She looks around for Isla or perhaps Theo, but didn’t see either of them. She piled her plate with crispy bacon, fluffy scrambled eggs, and buttered toast, savoring each delicious bite.
As she was enjoying her breakfast, Gwendolyn chatted happily with some classmates seated near her, barely noticing the time slipping away. It was only when she heard the faint chiming of the clock tower outside that Gwendolyn glanced around gasped in horror. Her eyes widened as she realized that she had completely lost track of time. "Oh, merde!" Her heart pounds n her chest as she hastily gulps down the last of her orange juice, leaving her breakfast half-finished, and racs out of the castle.
She made her way across the grounds, her cheeks turning crimson with embarrassment as she prepared to enter late. With a quick jog, Gwendolyn made her way down to the outdoor classroom. She slipped in quietly, hoping to attract as little attention as possible. She spots Isla, already seated with Oliver but then her eyes find Fergus and the open seat next to him. She flashed him an apologetic smile, grateful for the familiar face. “Je m’excuse.” She murmurs, under her breath and a bit windlessly as she sits.
The lesson had already begun, and Gwendolyn's professor was enthusiastically explaining the intricacies of Puffskeins, fluffy little magical creatures. As she listened, Gwendolyn felt a mixture of surprise and excitement when she realized that the Puffskein in the cage in front of her would be hers for the week. She was determined to make the most of the opportunity, despite her late arrival.
With renewed focus, Gwendolyn pulled out her notebook and quill, eagerly jotting down notes and observations as she watched the Puffskein interact with its surroundings. She was captivated by the creature's behavior and couldn't wait to learn more about its care and habits. Her initial embarrassment at being late faded into the background as she immersed herself in the lesson.

Isla waved back to Loce, "Heya, Loce," She said casually. It was going to be tricky not to draw too much attention from Fergus. As short-sighted as he could be, he was also incredibly observant and analytical. If he caught on that Loce and Isla were working together, it might not have the most ideal consequences. She looked back her Puffskein, listening to Professor Valko as he spoke. Isla raised her hand to answer the question but was beat out by Loce, "Shoot." She muttered to herself, noting to be a little faster next time. She took the name tag in her hands, 'Ostrov. Male' Isla looked down at the orange ball of fluff. He was adventurous, and could become aggressive if blocked. She furrowed her brow, noticing that the lock on her cage hadn't been unlocked yet. This was going to be particularly challenging. Isla knew she could handle it, her parents had given in to getting her a few Puffskeins when she was in her first year. Their grounds back home held many magical creatures. Puffskeins were fairly common. "Ostrov!" She greeted, holding her finger out in offering. Ostrov bounced around wildly, slipping his long tongue around her finger. She smiled, shaking her head. Isla decided then that she would not be adopting Ostrov. Isla waved as Gwen greeted the class, not wanting to interrupt Professor Valko. Her stomach turned a little. She wondered how much Gwen knew. It would be difficult to keep from her from long...

He barely noted Oliver O’Shea’s entrance, ignoring his agreement to unlocking the Puffskeins. A person like him wasn’t worth much to Fergus. For one, he had attempted to woo Anneli which was laughable at best. Their detention together hadn’t helped matters much either. Oliver had fumbled on the one task he had been assigned to. He smelled of mudblood. It was written all over him. Fergus didn’t look down upon some half-bloods, but muggle-borns always seemed a tad foolish to him in general.
Fergus smirked as Anneli threw a threat to Oliver. Atta girl, he thought. He understood that he was walking a fine line between his own personal attachments to Anneli and exploring a new connection with Gwen. It would be difficult to assign himself to anyone at this point. Halvar had been in touch with some exciting news.
He looked steadily at his grumpy-looking Puffskein. Unamused. Isla had cried for a trio of Puffskeins when they were kids. They were common and fairly boring. He listened to Professor Valko’s lecture, wondering if he might get anything out of this at all.
Fergus eyed his sister curiously. They weren’t talking much right now. He wasn’t sure why, but it bit at him. Perhaps it was because he had taken Gwen as his date. But that couldn’t be all…? Impossible. He thought about attempting to catch her to talk after class.
As the cage unlocked, Fergus frowned. Boets had furrowed, fluffy brows. He was excessively bulbous and had a hard time moving around. What could he possibly train this thing to do besides roll around angrily? It felt like a useless task in any case.
A sweet voice with a French accent whispered next to him. “Hey, beautiful,” He said, leaning down inconspicuously to whisper in her ear. At this point in their new relationship, he wasn’t sure where he stood. There were a lot of moving parts, though he was intrigued by Gwen. She wasn’t his typical type at all. In fact, she was the opposite. A brunette Gryffindor, a half-blood, and French. A triple threat in more ways than one. If his family thought it was anything more than a fling, it would have consequences.

Anneli smiled coyly at the squeeze of Loce’s hand. She didn’t want to let on any more genuine emotion than she already had in class. It was a difficult feat for her in Loce's presence. He had allowed her to be vulnerable like no one else had before. Her natural emotions had been more easily drawn to the surface by him. She had previously pondered the possibilities to this unfamiliar feeling, wondering if any magic could truly be at work. Anneli had discarded those thoughts fairly quickly.
She listened to Professor Valko’s lesson. Anneli frowned as he mentioned illegal breeders and poachers. It hit too close to home. She thought of her father’s dungeons in Germany, housing magical creatures of all kinds. Anneli glanced up to Professor Valko curiously, wondering if he might have ever met him...
Anneli lifted her Puffskein’s name tag, reading ‘Svetlina’. A friendly green-yellow fluffy ball that liked to nap a lot. Easy enough.
“Sounds just like you,” She agreed, winking at him. Anneli leaned in as he switched between their languages, a slight shiver sent down her neck. She watched as Loce sent his Puffskein’s cage toward hers. Anneli chuckled, thankful for the relief in the tension that had previously locked her jaw.
She looked to Svetlina as Mozŭk bounded for her. Svetlina awoke from her nap, panting happily as he approached. “Jag tror att Svetlina vill ta en tupplur med honom…” Anneli winked, her eyes beaming. It was truly bizarre. His presence seemed to lift the weight at her shoulders with ease. A spell she still couldn’t fully understand.
As her cage opened, Svetlina rolled into Anneli’s hands. She licked Anneli’s cheek happily before suddenly falling asleep in her arms. “Natt, natt, söt en.” Anneli whispered, petting its fur. She wouldn’t dare speak such affectionate words in English. Svetlina began to happily hum from the protective embrace of Anneli's arms.
Svetlina (if only more green-yellow 😉)

Zander didn't care what anyone else thought, he was stoked about the project. He wished he could have brought this little spunky lady back for his Tutu to meet, she would have found this assignment delightful. 'Well, Yuni, I think… no I know, we're in for a great week." He speaks quietly to the plucky little puffball as he opens her cage. She had rejected his offering of moth and he hastily switched over to the spiders, which were a happily accepted switch. Zander smiles and strokes the soft fur of his new friend. The thing practically vibrated beneath his fingers. He bounded from one of his shoulders to the other, then back to the desk, and finally sat atop his head. Apparently, that was the best spot because she nestled right into his hair and he easily reached up offering more spider snacks which she gobbled up. “It’s going to be a fun week indeed.” He contemplates if he should take a picture with Yuni on his head like this and send it to Tutu. She’d probably get a good laugh out of it.

Beowulf looked down at his little Puffskein. He was a fluffy ball of bright yellow fur. He lifted the tag, "Hey there, little Pari." He greeted, petting the creature as he rolled out from it's cage. He was calm, easy to train. This task had been made easy for him. Some of the others had been stuck with grumpy or aggressive Puffskeins. Wolf grinned widely at the creature. Pari almost seemed to grin back. "It's going to be difficult not to adopt him," He said out loud, laughing. Pari:

Aracely looks adoringly at the Puffskein before her. She coaxes her out gingerly with the allure of some dried moths, after noting the tag that declares it her favorite snack. It works splendidly and the Puffskein, Momiche, stares back at Aracely with almost the same amount of curiosity.
"Oh," She smiles warmly at her new pet, "I think we're going to get along just fine." She coos. She reaches out her hand and gently provides some deserved pets. Momiche thrums with happiness beneath her fingers. Aracely laughs happily.
She glances around the room, noting that not everyone had been so lucky. She turns her attention to Ezra, her hand still gingerly petting Momiche. She peeks at his tag. "Needs a lot of help in general...?" She reads aloud.
She looks up and into Ezra's eyes, trying to think of some kind of funny or charming remark but she gets distracted by his gaze. Her cheeks flush instead. "Maybe Momiche could be a good influence on..." She checks his tag again, "Devet." She offers up, timidly.
"We'll have to schedule in some playdates." She laughs now, a little more assuredly, "What do you think?" She peeks up at Ezra again, thankful not just that he's in this class and sharing this week-long experience with her, but that he's sitting next to her.
