Isla was just about to answer Loce's question, 'Are we supposed to know each other or be friends?' when a Slytherin girl entered the room and caught his eye. He quickly popped away after he caught her casting icy stares. Isla furrowed her eyebrow briefly, idly wondering what that might be about. She glanced back toward them, curious, recognizing the girl as Anneli Oden. Her brother Fergus had been quietly obsessive over her since his fourth year, promising Isla that is was not a crush. He described feeling some sort of pull when around her when Isla had abruptly cut him off, not wanting anymore details. Isla hadn't been as close to her brother since then, but knew that the pair potentially had a fling at one point. She hadn't paid attention to such details, worrying more about whether or not the Gryffindor team was going to finally win that year. Anneli was a fairly decent Chaser, Isla thought begrudgingly.
Her spirits relaxed as Gwen entered the room, happy to see her newly formed friend again. "I thought you'd never ask," She said in a silly accent, winking at her and laughing. "I'm happy you're in this class. Maybe we can work on the Homecoming Hogwarts Dance after this lesson?" Isla asked eagerly, the thought of Loce and Anneli behind her disappearing from her mind.

Anneli released a smile, satisfied with her choice of seating for the lesson. She watched as his things landed on the desk before him. Without much thought, Anneli reached over to organize his parchment, which had scattered slightly in the move. A natural gesture. Her attention was caught by the arrival of another classmate, a girl wearing an atrocious hat. Her feet instinctively tapped, hoping the lesson would begin soon if only to put an end to high-pitched good mornings. Anneli offered a thank you to the arrival of a pastry on her desk. Hufflepuff-made or not, pumpkin pasties were welcomed. Pumpkin patches were rare where she lived, and the taste was often coveted.
She laughed softly in response to his whisper. His observations reflected hers. Even if she had been attending for years, she still found herself bewildered by the transparency of some of her more quirky classmates. "Not all, though I won't reject a pastry in the morning." She said, eyeing the steaming pastry before returning her gaze to him. "Miss sorted somewhere." Anneli said slyly, her smile widening for a moment. She hadn't expected to be excited by a Transfiguration lesson, though she would maintain her focus, newcomer or not.

Ezra sped down the corridors, his usual rucksack and telescope strapped to his back. He slowed down in front of the Transfiguration entrance, worried he might be late. He had been studying Jupiter's moons in the library, completely unaware how much time had passed. He walked into the room, hoping to run into some of his teammates. It would be a long morning of class before he could escape to the Astronomy tower. Still, he was aware of how much weight each and every class carried. He had goals for the Ministry, so focus was required here.
He took in a flock of Slytherins, one of them familiar. It was the boy he had seen with Fergus. Ezra decided to avoid that part of the room, heading straight for the front of the class to sit next to the blonde girl with the Puffskein hat. "Nice hat." He said casually, taking out a set of parchment, immediately drawing a quill to take notes.

Loce started to reach for her, to stop her organizing his things, but then stopped himself and smiled at her instead. Her action was so immediate, he figured she had no real thought to initiate the gesture. And as he tended to like his parchment a certain way, she was only helping him. He chuckled and passed his pastry over to her. “I’m not much of a fan to be honest. Kind of got burnt out on this. You know the Americans even flavor their cookies and cereal with pumpkin?” He shuddered at the thought. If he never had to hear about pumpkin spiced flavored anything again he would be happy. He took in Ezra’s entrance with a grin, then turned to Anneli. “Is Ezra any good?” He asked, wondering how much decent competition he would have on the pitch.

Anneli hid a smile as he passed the pastry to her, she wasn't going to argue with the offer, "Ahh, I'll take this as an invitation to steal your serving of pumpkin loaves from your lunch platter." She said chuckling, an air of lightness playing at her voice. She had skipped breakfast in lieu of hours researching through the case of books Loce had lent her, though she wouldn't dare speak of her findings here. She grimaced slightly, "Can't imagine the combination. I think I've tried cereal once or twice. Any American choices I should look to, if I ever find myself there?" Anneli chuckled, she couldn't picture herself going there, but delighted in the thought nonetheless.
She peered toward Ezra, barely moving her head, "If my memory serves correctly, a toss up." Anneli shrugged, "Though quick, I believe he was the one who attempted to score when our cheat enchanted the quaffle." She couldn't help but to roll her eyes, "Don't know him personally, but respectable I suppose." Anneli casually took a bite of the pastry, a warm glow appearing on cheeks as she tasted the spices. At least the Hufflepuff could cook.

Fergus strode into the room, a bag half-draped over his shoulder and ruffled hair from a stressful previous night. He narrowed his eyes toward the beams of light that strewn into the room, becoming accustomed to the ambience before spotting her. Anneli. Fergus paused his initial stride, stopping at the very back of the class. The glisten of her golden hair had caught his attention, as it had many times before. She was sitting with a familiar new Slytherin, Loce. He was a Prefect and teammate, it made sense they might be chatting, Fergus didn’t want to admit he needed the reassurance.
He mindlessly scanned the rest of the room, eyeing his sister Isla. Fergus frowned slightly, he had missed his chance of sitting with Gwen. She had been the one person to pique his interest outside of Anneli, though perhaps not as intensely yet. They were only just becoming friends. A foolish looking Hufflepuff girl sat with Ezra toward the front of the classes. No chances of him sitting there. He then saw an unfamiliar, long-haired Slytherin boy sitting at the desk in front of Anneli and Loce. Fergus raised his eyebrows to himself, if not next to her, I’ll take in front. He strode over to the empty seat, looking at the Slytherin, “Morning, mate.” He greeted mindlessly before looking back to Loce and Anneli, “Loce,” He said, nodding his head before letting his gaze linger on her, “Anneli, nice to see you.” Too nice, in fact.
Fergus turned then, uncovering a quill made with rich, emerald green feathers and a piece of parchment. The Four Branches? Child’s play.

Loce laughed and nodded at Anneli. “Anything pumpkin flavored you can help yourself to. Be my guest.” He smiled at the playfulness in her voice, and hoped it meant she planned to sit near, if not with him. He ran his hand through his hair, pushing the bangs out of his eyes, and thinking it might be time for a haircut. American choices. He thought for a moment, pondering the differences between what he could get in America that he missed since he’d been here. “Funnel cakes would be my first choice. Especially on a hot summer day while strolling along the beach or at a carnival. The other would be the simple old stand-by for a quick snack or light meal. Peanut butter and Jelly sandwiches.” The latter he knew was less of a favorite among the few English acquaintances he had. But it was one of his favorites for a quick, portable snack. “Now if you want to try the funnel cakes, I know the best spot back home…” He trailed off at his mention of Boston as home, that was the first time he’d referred to it as such in a long time. She really did throw him off his game a bit. “In Massachusetts. I’ve tried making them at home, but they just aren’t the same.” He shrugged, letting the small frown linger for a moment before turning to meet her gaze. “PB&J however… If you ever want to try it, I can make for you.” He meant the latter as true invitation.
He nodded at her assessment of Ezra. So, either he had just been lucky enough to be the one to shoot on the previous keeper, or he was someone that he needed to keep an eye on when on the pitch. He chuckled as she called him respectable. He wasn’t sure pulling a wand on another student was respectable, but then again, he really didn’t know the history there.
He looked up as Fergus slid into the empty seat in front of them. “Hey Cap.” He said, nodding at Fergus’ greeting. Then he greeted Anneli and something in the way he looked at her unsettled him. He watched for Anneli’s reaction, not wanting to overstep if it was nothing but his own insecurities and hopes.

Anneli retired the pastries, the black feathers of her quill dancing slowly as she wrote the next line to her notes, "Conjuration, restrictions? Vanishment...can something vanished forever remain in non-being if left to its own 'will'?" She had never been particularly drawn to the subject, though had enough interest to ask questions. Anneli peered up from her parchment, briefly gazing toward Loce. Her proclivity to ask questions casting more curiosities into her mind.
It was in the midst of that wondering when a figure appeared into view before her. Fergus. Her body stilled. The first time she had met him was in her third year during summer holiday. The Reinhardts had been invited by her father, Halvar, during one of the few summers he had been present. They were childhood friends, or at least for those two months. He hadn't reentered her life until last year, when she became an official Slytherin Chaser. Her mind raced briefly, memories springing up for just a fraction of a second before they sank back into the icy vault in her mind. She hadn't seen him directly since the end of last term. There was no true confliction there, Fergus wasn't someone that regularly crept up into her thoughts. In any case, she would need to be around him. They had taken up as unofficial co-captains last year, and had lead the team to many victories, despite the blighted loss to Ravenclaw. Her stance didn't change at all in response to his greeting. "Fergus." Anneli said coolly, failing to reciprocate the 'kindness' he had extended. Nice to see you, sure.
As Fergus turned around, her mind did as well. Anneli returned her thoughts back to Loce, wondering what he might have captured in that small interaction. They could have that conversation later, if he wished or even cared. Anneli wasn't sure if she liked the idea of considering another's feelings just yet. She held some friends and few family dear, but had a history of failing the expectations of what others measured as caring. Though, perhaps, she could be, given the right sort of person.
Anneli turned slightly to Loce, her eye caught by the sight of his fingers combing through his hair. "Again, I'll hold you to it." She said, smiling in return, though the playfulness had been stripped from her tone. Anneli thought back to the term funnel cakes, hearing it from one of her uncle's many travelling visitors. She remembered the man saying they were similar to rosettes, another favorite of Anneli's. "If they are anything like rosettes, I'll be seeing Boston next summer." She shrugged, laughing softly. "A PB&J?" Anneli repeated, having the slightest idea of what that was but not caring either way. She was open to it. Plus, the idea of Loce cooking assumed her. "I suppose we have a PB&J date, then." Anneli casually tossed the word date in, haven't had assigned it meaning, at least not yet. Her eyes drifted back to Fergus for a split moment before she looked ahead to the magpie at the front, the desire to review the basics of Transfiguration leaving her entirely. Still, she sat studiously, unsure whether this lesson would present more interesting interactions...

Post by Headmistress Isadora Gunvald on Mar 16, 2023 19:41:57 GMT -8
Isadora tilted her head and subtly flapped her wings as her students filed into her room, some more quietly than others. She listened almost too closely to the random musings of Isla Reinhardt and a new transfer, Loce Vaisey. She happily noted Gwendolyn Shaw as present, but ruffled her feathers as Liam Greenway burst through the door. Isadora perched higher as a Hufflepuff, Poppy Blomst, served pumpkin pasties to her fellow classmates. She further noted Ezra Ansel and Fergus Reinhardt as present. Delighted to see such a flock of bright potential, she decided the gig was up, flying dramatically from her perch, a dazzling flash of black and turquoise above her students, before transforming into her human form. Standing next to her desk, one hand planted stoically on its surface, “Welcome to your first Transfiguration lesson of the term!” She said, commanding the room’s focus. “You know me as Headmistress Gunvald, but this year I will be filling the role as your Transfiguration Professor as well.”“Thank you to everyone who showed up on time. Though I will need to mark -5 points from Slytherin. Mr. Greenway, please make more time in the morning to get here, so you don’t come tumbling into my classroom again.” She said, “For those who show up after this time, it will be marked as late in the future.” Isadora then peered down toward the Hufflepuff who sat in the front row, “Before we begin our journey, I would like to award Hufflepuff 10 points. Thank you, Poppy, for showing a gesture of generosity.” She smiled warmly at the girl before turning to the blackboard and jotting a few notes. “Transfiguration is a complex and demanding form of magic that requires exceptional skill and precision. The four branches are found upfront. I expect you all to know the basics of each, being well into fifth years and beyond.” Isadora said directly, hoping to challenge each of her students in a way that might appeal to them. “If one didn’t study this past summer…” She said, turning to face her class, I’ve provided examples of each branch. Transformation - changing the form of an object or creature into something else. (i.e. turning a teacup into a mouse)Vanishment - causing an object or creature to disappear completely. (i.e. making a feather disappear)Conjuration - creating an object or creature from nothing. (i.e. summoning a chair)Untransfiguration - undoing a previous Transfiguration. (i.e. changing a mouse back into a teacup)Professor Gunvald wrote a question on the board as her students scanned the examples, “Every so often, I will test your basic transfiguration knowledge. The first to answer correctly will gain 5 House Points.”Question for +5 Pts (first to answer correctly) Switching spells simultaneously transfigure how many objects? Moving along, Isadora looked to her students once again, waiting for an answer, “We will dive deep into the sub-branches of these, some of them I think might interest you. Some more intricate than one might think at first...” She paused for a moment, scanning around her room of bright students, “As I’m sure some of you understand, Transfiguration is some of the most complex and dangerous magic you will learn at Hogwarts. Anyone messing about in my class will be a swift reduction of points, or worse, the detention chamber. You have been warned.” She wasn’t idle about her student’s safety. Isadora wanted to lighten the mood post-warning. She drew her wand, “Orchideous!” A bouquet of grandiose pink flowers suddenly appeared from its tip, Isadora catching it with one hand. Professor Gunvald placed the bouquet of flowers in an empty vase on her desk. “I figure we start with something light to get us started, a review of fourth year basics, if you will…” She turned to her chalkboard once more writing… Fourth Year Review - Bouquet Spell. Orchideous. (or-KID-ee-us)"Quantity, quality, and color of flowers will depend on how well you remember the correct wand movement…if I see any dead bouquets…” She sighed, “I’m hoping I don’t anyway, I expect a high level from all of you. A simple conjuration might warm you all up.” The weather outside was becoming increasingly chilly, as September grew on. Professor Gunvald demonstrated the spell again and answered a couple of questions before announcing: “I will be coming around to check on each of your bouquets.” Isadora paused again, “Might seem simple, but seeing as I don’t where each of you stand…this is my plain assessment of your conjuration ability. Your bouquet may be of any type or color, but must stand strong and healthy.” She paused for a moment, “Some say the bouquets conjured can reflect the witch or wizard. We will see....”

Loce had been watching Anneli take notes, thinking he might want to take some himself. She stilled as Fergus approached and spoke to her. Her answer was civil but cool. Loce was glad that emotion hadn’t been directed towards him. She remained still, tense even. There was something between them, some history there. His protective nature put him on alert. Loce leaned back in his chair, extending his arm across the back of Anneli’s chair. He lightly touched her back, then let his hand fall back to rest on the chair. He wanted her to remember he was here, with her. That if there were sides that needed taking, he would be by hers. He nodded as she compared funnel cakes to rosettes. She’d be seeing Boston... His first instinct was to ask with who, as he had been told he couldn’t return to the family home. But then he remembered he had never told her that. But if she wanted to see Boston, he would be her guide. “Just say the word and I’ll be your escort.” He smiled at her, knowing the distance that seemed to spring into existence between them was on Fergus’ head and not his. He would have to ask her about it at some point. Date. His mind caught on that word, knowing it was meant casually, but still. “Definitely. Whenever you like.” He followed her glace at Fergus, then turned his attention to the front of the room. He picked up his quill, blue and maroon feather sprouting from the top, and began to jot down what was on the board. He needed to take notes in this class. As he glanced towards the magpie again, he caught Isla out of the corner of his eye. Maybe, just maybe, he had found enough of a reason to dislike Fergus to give him the desire to help in her mission. Loce watched the magpie swoop overhead and transform into their deputy headmistress. He figured it would have been something like that. What would be a transfiguration class without some sort of transfiguring. He turned and glared at Liam for costing them points already and rolled his eyes at her granting Hufflepuff 10 points for brownnosing. He listened to the opening remarks, and comments about studying over the summer. Did anyone ever do that? he wondered. Then she asked the first question of the term. Loce smirked, even with as limited skill as he had at transfiguration, that was a fairly simple question. He raised his hand before answering. “Switching spells appear to change the location of two objects, but actually transform them into a mirror of the other.”. Ugh Conjuring, and flowers at that. What a waste of time. Then he caught sight of Anneli out of the corner of his eye and chuckled. Conjuring flowers for her seemed amusing. He figured a good book would be more her speed. He picked up his wand and attempted to seriously want a bouquet of flowers to burst from his wand. He moved his wand in the prescribed circular motion. “Orchidus”. A light pink light glowed from the tip of his wand and a bouquet of silver roses followed.

Ezra took notes from the first moment she transfigured back into her human form. He had suspected it was the Professor, why else would a lone magpie be located in England, and specifically at Hogwarts? He smiled along with classmates reactions, just happy to be able to revel in their surprise. Ezra glanced toward the Hufflepuff next to him, wondering if they were in the same year. He glanced briefly toward the door again, wondering if Aracely or Ameryn would be in this class. He audibly sighed as Loce answered the question before him, his hand only coming up seconds later. Ezra glanced back to Loce before adding, "Also known as Simultaneous Transfiguration." He paused, "A further branch includes cross-species switches, spells that can modify certain aspects of different species..." He drifted off, before he carried on, "Which I'm sure we'll be learning all about." Ezra studied the incantation, muttering it aloud a few time before declaring, "Orchideous!" A polished bouquet of light blue hydrangeas taking form from his wand.

Isla took down notes in a focused hurry, hoping that Gwen might be better at Transfiguration than herself. She had studied through most of her previous year, though some homework might have taken a backseat to Quidditch practice...Her eyes gleamed at Professor Gunvald, impressed by her demonstrations, no matter how simple an incantation. She remembered this spell from her fourth year, a memory of her dorm filling with bouquets from all the students making her smile. She glanced toward Loce as he speedily answered the question, slightly worried about how her house might fair in the House Cup. She jotted down Ezra's response as well, thinking it clever. Isla decided to give it a go, perhaps too impulsively, "Orchideous!" A small, limp pink flower first appeared. She frowned, attempting it again, "Orchideous!" she asserted, thinking of the gardens back home. A tall bouquet of vibrant pink and red Gladiolus appeared then from the tip of her wand... “Brilliant,” said happily, looking to see which flowers Gwen would blossom.

Fergus nodded back toward Loce, “Hey mate,” He glanced back briefly, smiling, “Though you’re sitting next to the actual Cap.” Fergus nodded toward Anneli, not daring to meet her gaze after her cold greeting. Ouch. They had spent so much time together on the pitch, in class, in the common room…and yet their entanglement had led to so much unexplained distance. He couldn’t understand it, at least. Either way, he would attempt to charm her back. At least over time.
He turned around to watch the lesson with minimal curiosity, though he had become advanced at Prefect facades, always seeming to be studious and attentive. Fergus had mastered this spell long ago, attempting to make a bouquet for Anneli…
“Orchideous.” He said casually, a full bouquet of vibrant pink roses and carnations forming into life. Fergus smirked, almost bored by the lesson. He felt Anneli’s presence more than a focused mind. He slipped a pink rose from the bouquet and turned in his chair, raising an eyebrow to Anneli, “A good luck token.” Fergus said, placing the rose before Anneli, inferring the upcoming Quidditch match and more…He eyed the flower on her desk briefly, thinking of Gwen momentarily, before slipping to turn to his desk.
Hopefully these would be up to Headmistress standards, he thought, scanning the room as classmates formed bouquets, some beautiful…others not.

Professor Gunvald lightly nodded her head 'yes' to the new Slythein boy, "You are correct, Mr. Vaisey. 5 points to Slytherin for a correct and concise answer." She eyed Ezra briefly, "And I will add an extra 2 points to Ravenclaw, for Mr. Ansel's additional information." She began to glide around the room, stopping to answer questions and smiling as bouquets began to bedazzle student desks. Isadora first scanned Mr. Vaisey bouquet of silver roses, "Ahh, yes, silver. A rare color to form." She said smiling, then looking toward other desks. A small bouquet of blue hydrangeas then caught her eye. "Nicely done, Mr. Ansel. 2 points to Ravenclaw for the polished finish of his bouquet." Behind him, Isla Reinhardt's bouquet came to life after a failed attempt. "Good try, Ms. Reinhardt. It takes once or twice to warm up sometimes..."Professor Gunvald then approached a vase of pink roses and carnations, "Well, Mr. Reinhardt! This shows some skill." She paused, before announcing, "5 points to Slytherin, for Mr. Reinhardt's ability to mix too different types of flowers into his bouquet. If you keep working at it, you will get there, too!"She then drifted to other desks, patiently awaiting other students to blossom their flowers into life...

Poppy warmly smiled at the boy who sat next her and complimented her hat, "Thank you!" She sang merrily. "My name is Poppy. Or Pip. Whichever you prefer." She grinned whole-heatedly after being awarded points for generosity. She had brought the pumpkin pasties for her classmates to enjoy, but the bonus points felt nice too. She took notes in a disorganized cursive, often leaving blotch marks on her lemon yellow parchment. She was amazed by Professor Gunvald's skills, her mouth visibly open. Poppy had great mastery over Herbology and the Care of Magical Creatures...Transfiguration was iffy. But if the lesson offered bouquet-making, maybe she would excel. "Orchideous," She said in an airy voice. A single, small, red poppy forming into view. "Hah! Fitting." She observed, surprised that the outcome would be so tongue in cheek. She wished for a beautiful bouquet like some of the others, but sat satisfied with her tiny flower.
