Loce grinned as she mentioned muggle studies. “I figured it would be an easy grade.” Considering his parents had insisted they interact with muggles until they went to Ilvermorny. He shrugged. “I am only taking basic 5th year potions, I needed something to fill the slot, and an easy grade made sense. But…. I could transfer over if you would like the company?” He smiled at her.
Loce nodded at her in encouragement as she raised her hand to answer the professor’s inquiries. He had a few thoughts himself, but he wanted to see what Anneli thought.
He listened to their conversation, moving his hand to rest it lightly against Anneli’s arm for support.

Isla casually walked into the classroom, recognizing almost all of the students within the room. She knew Loce and Anneli anyway, who had taken up a tendency to sit together through classes. There was another couple students, an unfamiliar Gryffindor and Ravenclaw who appeared to be twins. Her eyes scanned the room for the Professor, almost stunned by his presence upon sight. Isla had walked in amongst a discussion, eyeing the board which read Vampires. She pushed her long, auburn hair behind her ears and took a determined seat at the front for this class. She would need it. Isla was rusty and would need to apply herself here if she were to have any chances in the cellar or beyond. Her mind flickered briefly toward her dream of becoming an Auror, though that goal was becoming more lofty by the day.
'Human blood is preferred, but accurate that it is not needed.' What kind of discussion did she walk in on? Isla's mind raced back to the readings she had done with Seeressa, hoping to remember something about garlic and vampires. Her mind raced, perhaps she wasn't as well prepared as she previously thought...

Niamh smiled to the Professor, bowing her head, “Ah..tha, tha, tha mi duilich.” She said, the surprise of hearing him speak Gaelic rising into her eyebrows.
She steadily jotted notes as the Professor and Slytherin girl spoke, their discussion mirroring the many books she had read over the summer. Her corner of the cottage at home was stacked to the brim with volumes of textbooks, journals, nonfiction, and…comics. Something about the Professor speaking in Gaelic made her much less nervous about him. In fact, that was one of the first times she felt truly at home thus far since returning to the castle.
As he casted the question about garlic out to the students, Niamh smiled. She had spent many nights preparing onions and garlic for shepherd’s pie. She raised an eyebrow, remembering something from one of her books. She raised her hand, peering her deadpan expression to the attention of the class, “From what I understand, Garlic acts mahre as an allergy to vampires. It is not lethal upon first touch, though can be if ingested in large doses. They can be used to ward off vampires, but it would take o’ bit of strategizin’ if the intention were to commit murder.” Niamh quickly looked down, a sense of imposter syndrome taking hold. She were a muggle-born speaking on Vampires. It felt wrong, in a sense, to think she might know the answer.

Oliver grinned wholeheartedly as Professor Ghica spoke to him ‘one hundred thousand welcomes’. He knew then and there that he would be comfortable in this class, despite his disadvantages. Oliver nodded to him respectfully, “Tapadh leibh.” He tucked away his grandfather’s good luck pocket watch, observing the filling room…
He noticed a captivating Slytherin girl, a studious, cute Ravenclaw, another bombshell Slytherin, and then a pretty Gryffindor girl who had come to class just in time. Score, he thought passively, glancing around and becoming overly aware of his sister sitting next to him. There was only one other Slytherin boy in the room, we could take our pick. As long as no one thought about Niamh as he did these girls. Oliver had matured over the summer and had become emboldened after becoming Gryffindor’s Quidditch Captain.
Oliver’s eyes were glued to the unfamiliar Slytherin girl as she answered Professor Ghica’s question. His mouth hung open for a moment before he returned it back to place. She certainly knew a lot. And, she was beautiful. All of the girls in the room, aside from his twin, were. The girls didn’t seem as alluring last year. It made him a bundle of nerves and excitement. His mind certainly wasn’t on the lesson at hand.
He quietly beamed as Niahm quietly answered a question, proud of his sister. She had come a long way. He jotted a few notes down before raising his hand, “Professor…if the windows aren’t charmed, den what is?” Oliver knew enough foundation to understand that the Professor himself might be using a different charm to protect from rays.

Poppy rushed through the hallway, coming to a steady walk as she approached the Defense Against the Dark Arts arched doorway. She had a feeling she might be a few minutes late, spending the morning tending to a pair of particularly feisty murtlaps. Their tentacles had become wrapped around her hands a few times, leading to tiny red sores along the backs of her hands. She pushed the door forward, revealing a fairly full classroom. Poppy looked to the Professor, observing his crimson eyes. Vampire. "I apologize..." Her airy voice filling the room. She smiled, almost skipping to sit toward the front, listening in to the current conversation and pulling out her rainbow feathered quill. Poppy looked up then, realizing that she had come into the room with her gigantic, magenta Puffskein hat on. Ah well, she thought, writing down a few notes about a couple of vampires who were friends with her dad.

Ezra sauntered into the classroom, his telescope habitably strapped to his back. Not that he would be needing it here. He wasn't fond of the subject, though well-read in it. Ezra had already spent countless hours this past week hunched over books of various topics in the library. He hoped a subject he had studied up on might at least be touched upon in class. It could never hurt to gain some house points along with the knowledge. Ezra nodded to the Professor, silently apologizing for walking in on a discussion. He quickly noted his pale skin, red skins...Ezra had read about vampires extensively, though had never met one in real life.
He would have tripped had it not been for spotting Aracely. Ezra's heart still fluttered with the unexpected 'yes' she had given to his dance proposal. Their meeting had been random in the first place, and now her she was again. He smiled happily, tucking his long limbs into the seat at the desk next to her. "Hey, you." He whispered, unpacking his messenger bag and pulling out a black leather notebook and quill. His eyes peering back to the board, his eyebrows furrowed in deep thought.

Theo was going to be late to class. Well, maybe not if he runs. He hurriedly dashes from the dorms, out the common room entrance and through the corridors. Ducking and dodging fellow students and only being chided by one professor who saw him dashing through the halls to slow down. Once reaching the door he composes himself and enters as quickly and quietly as he can. He’d just seen a Hufflepuff girl enter the room, perhaps he wasn’t as late as he thought? However, the discussion is well underway and Theo doesn’t want to be too inturruptive. He sees the Hufflepuff girl’s enormous hat and prays that all the attention in the room will land there.
Without giving it all too much thought he spies a familiar face: Isla from the Gryffindor Quidditch team. He instantly follows that route, sliding into the seat beside her and silently hoping she doesn’t mind. Able to now take a breath and observe the area, Theo hopes to just mesh right into the lesson. Dementor; Lethifold; Basilisk, Grindylow, Acromantula, Werewolf, Inferius…Vampire He looks at the professor, taking in his appearance, and then settles to listen in to the conversation of the class…

Fergus strolled into the classroom though he knew he was perhaps a few minutes late. He had been up studying an old family relic which had footnotes about casting the perfect Bombarda Maxima, the strongest variation of the exploding charm. Fergus was planning a venture into the Forbidden Forest when he had realized the time. In any case, he was thankful he hadn't missed it. He nodded quietly to the Professor, having been tipped off that the new prof was a vampire. He briefly looked over the room, spotting Anneli. And Loce. Again. He raised a curious eyebrow toward the pair, nodding in their direction. Fergus could feel a simmering heat, his fist clenching subtly. He checked to see if Gwendolyn was present, but perhaps they didn't share this class together. Fergus nodded at his sister as he caught her eye.
He looked to sit with Cordelia, a teammate and friend. Fergus whispered a 'hey' to her before leaning back in his chair and folding his arms, attempting to gather the class's discussion.

Loce glanced around the room as Anneli spoke, his gaze falling on Olilver as he stared at her. He glanced up at Anneli to see if she noticed, then turned his attention to a loose piece of parchment. He scribbled something quickly on it, then folds it quickly into a bat. Animating the note, it jump from his desk and flies to Oliver, landing smoothly on the desk in front of him.
Loce returns his full attention to the conversation at hand and begins jotting down some notes, thoughts and questions to research later with respect to vampires and vulnerabilities. He looked up as the Professor turned the sunlight comment back into a working question for Anneli. He turned the notebook they had been looking at earlier and tapped the history scrawled out there.

Oliver passively observed a few more students file in, though none as dazzling as some of the classmates already present. He shifted an eye toward the blonde girl again, tossing his head up subtly as her eyes looked round the room. Oliver then caught the eye of the Ravenclaw girl and smiled. His home in Ireland was cozy, but this. This was where real living was.
He was taking notes on the effects of silver when a paper bat arrived on his desk. Oliver looked to where the direction of the note came from, spotting the desk where the stupidly hot blonde Slytherin sat. Without thinking, he flipped the paper open to reveal a message from someone named ‘Loce’. He peered up, realizing it had been the Slytherin boy sitting next to her. Though, Loce could be a girl’s name so…the idea of ripping up the paper and failing to meet might be a foolish move. He tucked the note in his robes, raising an eyebrow to himself before hunching over his desk to take further notes. Oliver would be there, regardless of who had sent the note. Hope its her though, he thought, chuckling quietly to himself.

Dragomir nodded curtly as the Gryffindor student entered in mid conversation. He then turned his attention to Niamh who spoke up on the effects of garlic. ”Correct Ms. O’Shea. Garlic, like silver, can harm in quantity, but in the typical amounts present in our everyday interactions, they are more of an annoyance. However, combining several annoyances with a more potent charm or defense, can aid in your successful dealings with, or eradication of, a vampire, given your desire at the moment.”A Gryffindor asked a question on charms and he smiled at him, suspecting he had an idea of the answer he was seeking. “Do you have theory Mr. O’Shea?”. He liked to have the students try to puzzle things out for themselves. Being able to think on the spot was key to actually perfecting defenses. Several other students interrupted the lesson coming in well after starting time. He turned to latest to enter, an older Slytherin, Mr. Reinhardt. He waited for the newcomers to settle before speaking again. “I realize this is simply the first class, and yes they tend to be reviews. However, I would prefer if you could see to it that you were on time from now on. This time I will not deduct house points for tardiness, however if this becomes a habit, I may start.” Ah yes, house points. He would have to remember that. ”Speaking of house points, 5 points are awarded to Slytherin for Ms. Oden being the first to correctly answer, another 5 points to Slytherin for Ms. Oden‘s thoughtful and thorough responses; and 2 points to Ravenclaw for Ms. O’shea sniffing out the correct effects of garlic.”
House Points Awarded thus far: Gryffindor = 30 pointsOliver O’Shea +10 Isla Reinhardt +10 Theo Cole +10 Slytherin = 50 points Loce Vaisey +10 Anneli Oden +10; +5 (first correct answer); +5 (Excellent deductions, thoughtful and thorough response) Cordelia Burke +10 Fergus Reinhardt +10 Ravenclaw = 32 points Niamh O’Shea +10; +2 (correct answer on garlic) Aravely Davies +10 Ezra Ansel +10 Hufflepuff = 10 pointsPoppy “Pip” Blomst +10,

She smiled to Loce, “I could use the company.” Anneli winked at him, crossing her leg under their desk.
Anneli listened to the Professor’s response, a focused gaze on him. Her studious look cracked upon him mentioning Loce and the Homecoming dance, dimples forming at her porcelain cheeks. Anneli smiled and nodded to him. She made a few notes about vampiric diet, a question forming. ‘Ways of procuring enough supply?’ she wrote in emerald ink.
She frowned to herself as Professor Ghica sidestepped the Unforgivable Curse question, though understandable. It is the first lesson, she thought mindlessly. Anneli watched as the silver ball dropped through the palm of his hand with a face of stone, not one to flinch at such sights.
Anneli passively noted Isla as she walked in late, along with a few other classmates. And, of course, Fergus. She paid him no attention. Anneli felt something was off. Looking up, she could see the unrelenting gaze of an unknown Gryffindor boy. His mouth slightly ajar. She looked away from him, furrowing her brow and retreating to her notes. What exactly was he looking at? Just then Loce quickly scribbled a message and sent it to the boy’s desk. Anneli looked up to him, tilting her head and smiling curiously.
She looked to the Gryffindor boy who the Professor referred to as Mr. O’Shea as he reflected the question back onto him. This will be good, she thought unconsciously, raising an eyebrow up at him and straightening her pose. Anneli nodded and smiled upon being granted house points. Though her mind was more focused on the question at hand.
She had an answer, if the gawking Gryffindor were to fumble.

Post by Ruby Froll on Mar 25, 2023 10:36:10 GMT -8
Ruby sat quietly, very glad she had been on time had the chance to grab her preferred seat. Being a Mud Blood and one of the younger students taking this class she didn't need help sticking out any further.
After getting up early and piling her flaming red hair on top of her head in a loose braid, Ruby had skipped breakfast. She couldn't bring herself to sit in the large dinning hall with SO many of her fellow students just yet. This had given her plenty of time to be first in class but that would be almost as bad as being late. Sliding in with just enough time to comfortably choose the middle seat furthest from the window, she had laid out her supplies and readied herself to take notes. Hopefully it wasn't a colossal mistake to take this 5th year course as a 4th year.
Second guessing this decision came again as the Professor had started speaking. A VAMPIRE! That would explain his eyes she supposed. This class was going to be challenging. Chiding herself as the points were awarded, Ruby reminded herself that she was part of a house now. Being a Gryffindor meant something to her and she would have to speak up if she wanted to be part of the team. She had known at least one of those answers, the one about Garlic. Being invisible was not going to be possible regardless of her instincts.
The new pen continued to fly across the notebook fast enough it gave the illusion that every word was being recorded, her focus totally on the page. This concentration helped to block out the worry that the Professor might single her out.

Dragomir listened to the conversations through the class. Wondering briefly if he had the patience after all these years to put up with the teenage angst. He chuckled, he remembered his own time as a teenager and just shook his head. He would not willingly repeat any of that. He watched his hand for a moment and shook his head. Not good. It was not healing the way it should be. Ah well, perhaps he was mistaken. Then again. He usually wasn’t. He shrugged, tucking the thought away for later and turned fully, standing to address the class. “It would seem our class time is running short. I would offer for homework that you think on any other question you may have about Vampires in general, or my experience a on in particular. I will answer any questions I feel will provide a benefit to the class knowledge as a whole.” He surveyed the class again, his gaze falling on Ms. Oden. “Ah, yes. Ms. Oden. Your question on the Unforgivable Curses effects on vampires. He smiled, Excellent question. Vampires. For the most part, the Unforgivable Curses will affect vampires similarly to any other witch or wizard. Vampires feel pain, although to a lesser extent than your average witch or wizard. But the intensity of the Cruciatus Curse was banned due to the level of mental as well as physical pain inflicted. Therefore, the intended affect will be the same for both.” He shifted, an involuntary shudder running through him at the thought of the curse. It, as well as the others had been banned for a good reason. “The Imperious curse, as well has a fairly similar affect as well. Although the vampire’s will of mind tends to, for the most part, be a bit stronger than that of an average witch or wizard. Since part of the imperious curse has to do with overpowering your opponent's mind, this could lead to the inexperienced caster having the curse turned back on him. I have seen it happen wizard on wizard as well, so Vampires are not special in that ability. As for the Killing Curse, it has some unintended affects when applied to a vampire. As you astutely pointed out Ms. Oden, there are two parts to the Killing Curse, one that kills the body and the second that destroys the soul. Since, technically, the body is already dead, were that the only component of the curse, it would have no impact on a Vampire. However, the destruction of the soul becomes the result of the curse’ effect on a vampire. It will destroy the soul, leaving, as you suggested, an empty husk. Zombie perhaps might describe what was left, in the fact that it would be left a thoughtless monster wandering the area. On the other hand, given the strength and speed of the vampire when compared to an average wizard, and the aversion to sun and fire, the effects of the killing curse on a vampire basically creates an uncontrolled Inferius type state. It would, in fact, create a fairly powerful killing machine, since it would be driven by mere instinct. The basest of the vampire instincts is to feed, and therefore I would suspect the caster of the curse may find himself being used to satiate that instinct.” He nodded at the class, moving to re-settle in his original perch on the windowsill. ”You may be dismissed. However just a few more notes. First. Ms. Oden, It was a pleasure to see this level of knowledge and willingness to share that knowledge with your classmates. 5 Points awarded to Slytherin for knowledge an inquisitiveness surpassing the average student at this level. Total house points are posted on the blackboard for your reference.” He paused, watching the students collect their things. He nodded, as if confirming a thought and stood again, crossing to where Ms. Oden and Mr. Vaisey were seated. “Ms. Oden. I would like a word with you in my office when you have a spare moment.”. He smiled, then glanced at Mr. Vaisey and back to her. ”You may bring another student along if you wish.” He offered. Realizing a one-on-one meeting with an unknown vampire, teacher or not, might unsettle the most composed and confident of their students.
Final House Points Awarded for Lesson One: Gryffindor = 40 pointsOliver O’Shea +10 Isla Reinhardt +10 Theo Cole +10 Ruby +10 Slytherin = 55points Loce Vaisey +10 Anneli Oden +10; +5 (first correct answer); +5 (Excellent deductions, thoughtful and thorough response); +5 (knowledge an inquisitiveness surpassing the average student at this level). Anneli gazed to Loce as the lesson ended. It had almost been too brief. She listened to Professor Ghica, graciously nodding to the award of house points. She didn't hold a lot of house pride outside of Quidditch, but she would take them nonetheless. It felt good to be heard, even through such a medium. She jotted down a few questions she might have for next class before carefully placing her items back into her bag.
She looked up then to see Professor Ghica answering her question. Anneli smiled graciously, wishing she hadn't put away her things. Though she had a feeling she would etch each of his words into memory regardless. "Thank you, Professor." She said softly. Her mind raced with potential follow-up questions...Had he ever been under the influence of a Curse himself? Felt the pain of one? Anneli looked down to her desk, wiping the thoughts from her mind.
Anneli refocused as he mentioned the Killing Curse. Her body stilled. This was the question she was most curious of. She wanted to understand the boundaries of all magic. Anneli's brow furrowed at his words 'empty husk'. She imagined an army of zombie-like Vampires. Their eyes pale from the Curse. Wandering like Inferi, waiting to kill the next moving figure...
Her imagination regained in class, "Has it ever been done, Professor?" She asked suddenly. The class was already beginning to pack and exit, "Has anyone ever cast the Killing Curse upon a vampire? Or vampires? To wield to their...benefit?" Anneli stared at him. Her blue eyes darkened as the sky outside did.
Anneli watched Professor Ghica move to settle onto the windowsill, "Of course, sir." She answered steadily, looking next to her, "May Loce come?"
