Name: Viktor Dimitar Valko
Birthday: July 20, 1978 (Age 44)
School: Durmstrang
House: Ucilena
Year Graduated: 1996
Blood: Half-Blood
Languages: English, Bulgarian
Special: Werewolf
Desired Position: Care of Magical Creatures
As a child, Viktor was boisterous, protective, and fiercely loyal to animals. His love of creatures had been sparked by the mysterious forest that surrounded their small home. He often escaped to the woods to build fires, observe creatures, and hone his ‘survival’ skills with his siblings. Viktor enjoyed wildlife much more than sitting in a classroom at Durmstrang. Though he graduated with high honors in the Care of Magical Creatures, other subjects left much to be desired. His parents, Viktor and Magdalina Valko, had loved their children far more than their marks at school.
During his high school career, Viktor became an apprentice under a powerful elder Magizoologist named Atanas Banov. He met Banov during a duel between locals and a nomadic group of magical creature poachers. The poachers in Bulgaria had been known to be particularly brudish, killing creatures at random and capturing Veela to be their wives. Bulgaria was a hot-spot for illegal Dragon breeding and trading. Viktor was only 18 when he helped Atanas Banov to drive away the poachers and free a group of juvenile Norwegian Ridgebacks to their proper homes.
Viktor studied under Bosnov, becoming interested in creatures of all kinds; from the common and unassuming to the rare and massive. He spent the last few years of his time at Durmstrang as Head Student Caretaker of Creatures. Viktor wasn’t known for being a good student, but this is where he excelled. He was thorough in his job, even if a little distractible and goofy.
Upon graduation, Viktor continued his studies and adventures through different countries with Bosnov. He had a particular affinity for Hippogriffs, able to befriend them with a small bow. He had trained to be a Magizoologist himself. By the age of 25, Viktor had visited over twenty countries and had amassed a traveling zoo himself. His right hand pet being an overgrown Kneazle named Keĭt. He had also met a woman named Daniela, a beautiful witch who harbored injured dragons from poachers. Viktor and Daniela intended to marry just after his 26th birthday, when he would be arriving back from a Merpeople study in Greece.
It was in Greece, alongside Bosnov, where Viktor met an unlikely fate. It was the night of a full moon. He had been up late with Bosnov by the water discussing the hierarchies of merpeople society. They were just about to retire to their traveling tent when a growl erupted from behind them. A massive, drooling werewolf rampaged toward Bosnov’s stunned frame. Viktor had no time for magic. He pushed Bosnov to the water, sacrificing himself for his old friend and mentor. Viktor took a bite from the werewolf before being hurled back into the water himself. Pain seared from his chest. The werewolf, stunned by a blast from a recovering Bosnov, quickly turned back into the dark trees of the mountains behind them.
Bosnov aided Viktor’s wound using a mixture of powdered silver and dittany. He sealed the gruesome bite, allowing Viktor to live. Viktor lived in a fragile state for about a month before being able to return to Bulgaria from Greece with Bosnov.
Upon his arrival, he was greeted again by a full moon. His first transformation was the most painful. Viktor’s bones seemed to stretch and break until he was twice his size. His usually boisterous and jovial attitude was one of stark bloodlust and violence. No matter how much he had prepared, nothing in the world would stop him from seeking blood. Viktor fled from Bosnov and his fiancee Daniela, up into the mountains. That is where he found him. An unknown boy, who wore overalls and a cap. A farmer’s son. He was out late, it looked like he was searching for something. Viktor took no compassion for the boy. He was killed instantly upon his bite.
When Viktor awoke and realized what he had done, he swore to a life of gaining as much control over his transformations as he could. He learned from Bosnov how to create the challenging, bitter-tasting Wolfsbane Potion. This allowed Viktor to keep his human mind intact during transformations. Since his first kill, Viktor has led a life of balance to keep his sadistic rage within control during transformations. He self-isolates during full moons and has scarred his body with his own bites. Despite his efforts, Viktor’s fiancée’s Daniela split from him upon realizing what he was. Viktor swore to a life of servitude when his heart broke.
Viktor moved to England when he turned 30, wishing to restart his life after his heartbreak. He became more controlled, assimilating back into society and becoming his old jovial self again. Viktor began to teach prospective Magizoologist students in small outdoor classrooms in England. He gained a reputation for being open about being a werewolf. Viktor found that it was pointless to continue to stigma. He was able to capture a beast’s perspective having lived it himself.
He has spent the last fifteen years teaching and living humbly in England. Viktor has never taught at a formal ‘school’ rather random, nomadic teens and adults who were interested in the subject. This would be his first time applying to such an institution, and he is curious whether or not he’ll be accepted.
